Windows 10, which was officially unveiled on September 30, 2014, is the current major release of Microsoft’s Windows operating system and the successor to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
Microsoft’s goal with Windows 10, codenamed “Threshold” and later builds coming from the “Redstone” branch, is to provide a common operating system that can run across multiple platforms—including PCs, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, and even Xbox One, Surface Hub, and HoloLens. Each platform has its own user interface (UI), but they all run Windows 10.
In addition to its platform-unifying design, Windows 10 includes several new features and significant changes. Many new features are intended to improve the desktop experience and attract business users who were turned off by Windows 8’s tile-based UI and the removal of the Start menu at first. The Start menu in Windows 10 combines the application list from Windows 7 and the live tiles interface from Windows 8’s Start screen. Like standard desktop programs, Windows-8 style “modern” apps (now called Universal Windows Platform or UWP apps) can run within a window on the desktop. Previously known as Project Spartan, Edge is Windows 10’s default web browser. With the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the Edge browser now supports extensions, significantly increasing the browser’s flexibility. Internet Explorer 11 is included with the operating system, but it is essentially the same as the version found in Windows 7 and 8.1. Windows Timeline and Shared Experiences

Cortana allows you to resume work, pick up web browsing sessions from another PC, and send browser sessions from mobile devices to the desktop. In the October 2018 Update, a new Your Phone app brings recent photographs and SMS messages from your Android phone to your desktop. The rollout was resumed in December 2018, and the update should have been applied to all devices by early 2019. The official launch started in late May 2019.

Microsoft included a new version of its screen capture tooling in the October 2018 Update. Shift+Win+S will launch a new screen capture experience that includes a pen-enabled editing tool for editing and annotating your captures.
Originally part of the Windows Ink Workspace, Sticky Notes is now a standalone app with a major update planned to integrate it with Windows’ other note-taking and task management tools.
Using the same Microsoft Graph that powers the Timeline, Windows now provides a clipboard history that works across devices logged into the same Microsoft account.
